Abstract

The Kansai dialect is one of the most well-known dialects in the Japanese language, often associated with expressive, humorous, and sometimes rough personalities. In the field of linguistics, this phenomenon can be examined through the concept of yakuwarigo a type of role language or speech style associated with specific character types in fictional media such as manga, anime, and drama. This study explores how the Kansai dialect is used as yakuwarigo to shape character identity, reinforce social stereotypes, and create distinctive communication dynamics. A qualitative descriptive method is used by analyzing Kansai dialect dialogues spoken by the character Anastasia Hoshin in the manga titled Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Chapter 3. The results of the study indicate several distinctive grammatical features of the Kansai dialect as spoken by the character Anastasia Hoshin. Thus, the use of the Kansai dialect in the context of yakuwarigo demonstrates how language variation can serve as a powerful narrative tool in shaping character perception and enriching storytelling.
