Abstract

Literary works can describe social criticism of patriarchal culture, especially in the context of society. Literary works are able to raise the reality of gender inequality, show that women are often victims of systemic oppression, and open up space for discourse on resistance and empowerment. The background of this study is based on the importance of analyzing characters in novels that represent ideological positions towards feminism, both those who support (profeminism) and those who reject (counterfeminism). This study aims to identify and analyze profeminist and counterfeminist figures in the novel Jerum by Oka Rusmini. The method used is a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis based on the theory of literary feminism. Data were analyzed by critical reading of the text, which focuses on narrative, dialogue, and power relations between characters. The results of the study show that the profeminist characters are I Kundangdya, Ni Sekar, Nyi Semal & Aki Gentong, Aki Gubrah & Ni Sendeng, Ni Jerum, and Ni Sentil. The counterfeminist characters are I Keber, Ni Sambreng, and Ki Liman Tarub. The Jerum novel becomes a place where the conflict and debate between the idea of feminism and the rejection of it in the life of Balinese society occurs. This study shows that literature can be an important medium to convey and discuss issues about women. This finding also contributes to the study of feminism in Indonesian literature by showing the struggle and gender inequality depicted through the characters and stories in the novel.
